If you are one of those women, who feel hesitant in breastfeeding in public, then you must read this. Here are certain ways to make you comfortable in this task.

Practice

Before you venture out, perfect the art of breastfeeding within the walls of your home. There are certain things you need to learn, such as latching on your baby, holding your baby correctly while feeding, and others. Buy a breastfeeding pillow to give you support while feeding. You can ask your doctor, or midwife to teach you the basics. Once you are confident and comfortable with the idea of breastfeeding, you can carry out breastfeeding in public.

Suitable Clothes

Breastfeeding tops are available at the stores. They are loose and let your baby reach your breasts easily. A very loose top even allows you to slip your baby underneath, without unbuttoning the shirt. Besides, it covers up your breasts decently. Slings are another "tool." Your both hands are free and you can position your baby in such a manner that nobody realizes you are feeding in public. You can even get a breastfeeding cover that keeps your breasts and your sucking baby covered.

Feeding Time

You should know when your baby needs feeding. A hungry baby will do anything to draw your attention and a baby wailing on top of her voice may cause awkward situations. With frequent sessions, you can make out when your baby needs your milk.

Suitable Public Places

If you are feeding in public for the first time, then select a place that is not too crowded. A park is a good place to breastfeed. Your partner or friend can accompany you for support. As you talk to them, you will feel at ease and forget you are at a public place.

In case somebody stares at you when you are feeding your baby, stare him or her back! They will go away! You need not gaze down or feel ashamed. In addition to this, some of you might face opposition for it. You own family members may not support you regarding this. Do not be disheartened. Explain to them that it is your right to breastfeed your child and more important, it is your baby’s right to get her mother’s milk.

Breastfeeding in public might still be a taboo in certain western areas; however, women are coming out in the open to change this attitude. You can be one of them!
