Success is a journey, and journeys can be long, tedious, and filled with frustration, or they can be fun-filled, exciting, and ultimately rewarding by the time the journey has ended. The choice is really up to you. It makes good sense to trust the process, have faith and belief in yourself, and make a commitment to align yourself with others who have travelled the road you are currently on, and who have done so with integrity, with honour, and yes, with success.

What are good strategies to assist you in streamlining this process and making your journey an enjoyable one? First, you should define the word ‘success’, and what it means to you. To me, the word success is an indicator that I have been able to bring balance and harmony in my lifestyle, both personally and professionally. It means that I have been able to forge meaningful relationships, nourish my spirit, enrich my health, and be financially secure.

To streamline your path to success, begin by determining what you really want to achieve in life. What will make you happy? Making clear, well-defined goals in all areas of your life can act as the catalyst you need to put you on the right path to success. They need not be complicated goals or elaborate, or even long-term, but they need to be a reflection of who you are and the purpose you see yourself contributing to your corner of the world.

Making goals does not mean that you are stuck with them, you can change them as often as you want or as necessary as it becomes, but they do provide a point of reference whenever you feel that circumstances are moving you in another direction, and will ensure that you stay true to your journey.

The habits we create determine how far we can go, and how successful we ultimately will become. It is worthwhile then, to take a serious look at our day to day habits and assess whether they are good or bad.

Do we start our day with the confidence that we can manage any challenges that come upon us, or do we begin with the mentality of a defeatist that ensures struggles and frustration? Are we masters in the art of procrastination, or do we take immediate and decisive action to get the job done? Take note of your habits, whether good or bad, and then commit to change. Study successful people, notice their disciplines, and their habits, and ask their advice.

Many of them are only too happy to give pointers and strategies that will help you along the way. Emulate these persons wherever possible. It is a very true saying that when the student is ready the teacher appears. Your teacher will appear when you show that you are ready to learn.

The power to focus well is a definite challenge for many on the path to success, and it is a quality that is essential if we are to be successful in this game of life. Being focused means that you clearly understand the boundaries you have placed on yourself.

You must be accepting of these boundaries, and be prepared to say no to anyone who violates them, including yourself! It is a known fact that while we will complain and be heartily upset if others intrude on the limitations we have set, we seem to have no great difficulty in doing so ourselves, and can ably talk ourselves out of any situation we feel a need to. A quick reference to our goals, once again, can do wonders to reinforce our objectives and restore us on our intended path to success.

Acceptance of oneself is no small measure in creating success. We all have a very real inclination to be highly self-critical, and often refuse to take credit when we have done something really well. Just as we are willing show appreciation to others in similar situations, we can certainly be generous with ourselves.

I would also add the ability to be thankful, to be able to ask others for feed-back on our performance, and to build an emotional support system for those times when the journey leads us up a few mountains will go a long way in ensuring that the path to success is achieved in a masterful way.
