The Web dictionary defines affirmations in the following way: Affirmative statements you make to yourself designed to "re-program your psyche" or replace mental concepts not serving you.
"It's the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen. " Claude M. Bristol
Our internal self talk has a large influence on our conscious and subconscious mind therefore it is wise to use positive affirmations to bring about desired results.
Affirmations, like most other personal development tools and strategies, will work to the extent that you use them as intended.
Many times folks apply strategies or tools in an ineffective manner because they do not believe these can work or they simply do not want to apply the necessary and correct effort. They then turn around and claim that the said tool or strategy does not work.
I am here to tell you affirmations work, because that has been part of my life experience. Therefore they can work for you, when used consistently and correctly.
Just in case you think positive affirmations cannot work. Think of the opposite for a moment. Have you ever been told a negative statement: "You are not capable of ... or you are not worthy of... "? What kind of root did that take in your mind and how did that one statement rule your life?
"We cannot always control our thoughts, but we can control our words, and repetition impresses the subconscious, and we are then master of the situation."
Florence Scovel Shinn
Now, back to affirmations; once you have decided on the result you want to see manifest, it is time to articulate a few powerful statements that will help reprogram your subconscious. In turn these statements will diminish the internal resistance and blockages that have in the past impeded the manifestation of your desires.
To write effective affirmations, keep them short and in the present tense. These affirmations need to be focused on the positive and be free of all negative words, as the Universe does not interpret negations.
Example: If you write "I do not want any debt. " The Universe hears " I want debt." Instead write something like, " I meet all financial obligations ahead of time, with ease and grace." "I have lots of money to enjoy, to invest, and to share." " Money comes to me, easily and frequently."
The two most powerful words to use in affirmations are: "I am..." You can also use "I build..." "I have..." "I get..."
If your affirmations contain words like," I will be.." or "I would like..." that is incorrect and will be ineffective.
When you first say your affirmations, you might be thinking, " You liar, that's not true for me." There is this sort of a ping-pong match going on, inside your head. Be patient with yourself and work with your affirmations.
Every time a negative affirmation comes to mind, replace it with a positive one. You will soon see that you are in fact reprogramming your thoughts and that the new beliefs are being integrated.
