It is a known fact that since 2002, the number of international students going to the United States to study has been steadily declining. The reason is quite logical due to the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the country in 2001 are continually taking their toll.
Several foreign students are obviously feeling the fear about going to the US to study. That is because they are afraid that their lives might be risked and endangered if terrorists still manage to sneak in and complete other attacks in the country. Aside from that, the US itself is conducting measures that will hinder the entry of foreign students into its universities. Now the country is implementing stricter provisions and regulations through accepting international students. US Immigration law is stricter in approving student visas to be provided and awarded to foreign students.
So the US government is quickly assessing the situation. It is carefully weighing its options on how it can emerge successfully from the situation. Some measures are not yet apparent but some are obvious and widely anticipated.
Initially, the US is expected to reform its current strict implementation of tighter student visa granting. Many foreign students are shunning from studying into the country because of the policy. Now, international students from South Korea, Southeast Asia, India, Europe and the Middle East are undergoing strict and at times humiliating procedures before they are allowed to get student visas and fly to the US to study. More often, such students are turned off and instead prefer to study elsewhere, where they believe they will be accommodated and treated more amicably.
The US could also consider lowering the costs of international education at both its public and private universities, with many other countries having restricted financial situations, lowering these fees may attract more international students.
