Our ability to converse effortlessly with those we encounter is a critical component of all our personal and business relationships. Using and having good communication skills promote an image of self-confidence, intelligence, and qualities of being truly authentic with other people. 

If you need to improve upon your communication skills, here are a few tips to help you get started in communicating effectively by being able to converse with anybody—any time—any where!

First of all, in order to have interesting conversations, you must be interesting to others. This is a success skill that is one of the keys to success. Staying informed on current events, being involved in activities, and keeping a mental list of good topics of discussion are excellent ways to break the ice and a great tool to help you learn how to start a conversation.  "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by DaleCarnegie. It stresses taking an interest in people by asking simple--friendly questions. One of the methods taught in the home-business industry is the acronym: F O R M.  

I’ve learned that, as human beings, we are all "egocentric" and we all like to talk about ourselves. One of the books that made a big difference in my life was: 

F—ask people questions about their "FAMILIES" O—ask questions about their "OCCUPATION" R—ask questions about their "RECREATIONAL" life M—the "MESSAGE" or "MONEY" 

You can expand on someone’s answers and always ask for clarification for your own understanding. Don't be afraid to ask questions simply because it is best to be interested in them. Learning how to start a conversation is not difficult when you truly care about people and make the conversation "about them".

Another key to success is by learning good listening skills which are so important in our conversations. After you make the initial effort-- always listen closely to the other person's response. Learning to be a good listener is critical. You will find that people really like you when you listen to them and find out what is important to them.

In listening you'll often find an invitation to continue the conversation if you listen carefully and respond accordingly. It’s a good idea to alternate between talking and listening to what the other person is saying; and to make additional comments appropriately. Learning how to start a conversation is really just about using good manners and showing a genuine interest in others. This could be the beginning of helping somebody by "changing the course of their life".
