The reasons and purpose behind Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search Engine Optimization or SEO is an internet methodology used to maximize a webmaster’s web rankings as well as to generate optimum traffic, ideally by placing the website/link in the top 10 natural search listing within each search engine.

"What is a natural search listing?" many might ask. A natural search engine listing is located at the left hand side of your searching site such those you would see on Google or MSN. These are "free listings" or so to speak, as opposed to the "sponsored links" on the right side columns you would sometimes see on a Google search page. "Sponsored links" are in effect advertisement spaces paid for by the site owners/masters in order to jack their sites up on page 1 of the search listing by paying sometimes a substantial amount of what would be classified as "marketing fees".

Everyday millions of web users around the world surf and search for information, and use the internet to find and purchase every kind of products and services imaginable. Needless to say, placing your website on the top of each search list, especially the globally popular ones like Google, is equivalent to having truckloads of shoppers pouring into your store everyday. In order to generating traffic as such, webmasters need to manifest potentially inviting and popular keywords in their web pages.

Some of the beneficial purposes of Search Engine Optimization includes:
• Generating and increasing business leads
• Promoting the sales of products and / or services
• Marketing and branding
• Minimization of business costs

Search Engine Optimization is also a form of website marketing, advertising and promotion. Commonly used and popular keywords that potential customers would type in a search engine to find their desired products are optimized on the sellers’ website pages in order to drive in traffic.

In the instance of an online pet foods store, the owners of the website would target to be on the first, or if not top 10 ranking in a Google or Yahoo search for "pet foods" or "pet shops". This greatly increases the chances of a obtaining a sale as opposed to being on the 5th page of the search listing.

Big establishments and corporations are realizing the immense benefits and pros of Search Engine Optimization, mainly due to the small investments and large returns, in other words capitalizing on their Return on Investment (ROI).

Taking the above pet shop for example. The online pet shop that focuses on SEO to maximize traffic to their store can expect a returns of 4:1 or more. This means there is 4 times more income to expenditure. In the conventional way of marketing i.e. magazine, newspapers etc, the same business would be barely break even, and in rare cases get an ROI of 2:1.

To summarize, Search Engine Optimization is now used as a profitable and phenomenal means to drive vast traffic to a website in a fast and cost effective way. Even if the business is not an online based entity, SEO is a fantastic advertising medium and that itself lends an impact that can get yourself a great deal in ways more than one.
