So Mote It Be. These words are uttered by thousands of spell casters at the end of their rituals, but what does it mean and where does it originate.WikiAnswers.com states that So Mote It Be "Is usually said in closing of a spell, visualization or ritual, and means 'so as I will it, so shall it be done.' In other words, it is an affirmation that the object of the speaker's desire will manifest into reality."As well as being widely used in Wicca, 'So Mote It Be' is also common in Freemasonry. The earliest Masonic script from 1390 ends with "Amen! Amen! So Mote it Be! So say we all for Charity".Bernard E. Jones, author of The Freemason's Guide and Compendium, defines the phrase as "An operative exclamation, because it expresses a wish, or desire," he goes on to say that "So mote it be includes a part of speech of the Anglo-Saxon word motan, having the general meaning of 'to be allowed' Thus 'So mote it be' is simply So may it be.""Water and earth,Where you are cast No spell nor adverse purpose last Not in complete accord with me. As my word, so mote it be!" A Wiccan Consecration RitualWicca is a nature-based religion popularised in 1954 by Gerald Gardner. There are many stories concerning Gardner's inspiration for founding Wicca, some believe that he was initiated into a continuation of European Paganism, while others state that he was influenced by Aleister Crowley and/or the Rosecrucian Order Crotona Fellowship.Aleister Crowley is one of Britain's most famous occultists gaining notoriety for his outrageous behaviour, but is probably best known today for his numerous books on the subject of the occult. Crowley had claimed to be a Freemason, but records held at the United Grand Lodge of England have been disputed. The Rosecrucian Order Crotona was founded by George Alexander Sullivan in around 1924. Its members studied esoteric works, it has been argued that this group is the 'New Forest Coven' that Gardner referred to. 1n 1930 it was believed that the group had begun to perform rituals based on Co-Freemasonry.Co-Freemasonry is a form of Freemasonry which admits both men and women. It began in France in the mid-nineteenth century.Whether Gardner was a Mason is unclear, however given the influence of the people that he spent time with, it would appear that the use of the phrase So Mote It Be in Wicca is derived from Masonic rituals.
