As parents, we want our children to have a well rounded education. This education will naturally start from the moment they are born. As the child grows up there are many other lessons they will be exposed to. For many children their daycare teacher is the first adult outside of their family who will teach them the many important lessons they will need to learn to cope with life.

Now, while there may be some daycare centers where the young children will learn to read and write as part of their school educational program, other daycare centers will emphasize the care and happiness of their young charges. In both of these situations the daycare teacher will help her charges learn to the best of their abilities.

It used to be that daycare teachers just needed to look after their charges. Make sure they didn’t have any "accidents" of the bodily kind. However if this did occur – as it is bound to be since we are talking about small children – these teachers were expected to clean the child up, dress them in new clothes and then clean the accident up too.

Nowadays this is still true but there are other things that a daycare teacher is expected to provide. For instance these teachers will make sure that the children have firm but fair discipline. Any signs of trouble are to be broken up gently and the children are corrected so they understand what they were doing wrong.

The daycare teacher of today is also expected to know at least rudimentary first aid, and barring that, be able to keep their head in a crisis. Small children being what they are, (mischievous, playful, highly curious, and prone to getting into things and places they shouldn’t really get into), it is one of the key features that a daycare teacher should have, the ability to stay calm.

This is the feature that most daycare centers will prize above all else in their daycare center staff, and something that parents will also appreciate. But what is really appreciated by parents and the children alike is if the daycare teacher looking after her young charges, really loves children. If this is the case it will show in everything that she does, and her young charges will feel it too.

This doesn’t mean that the children will be more apt to listen to all that she has to say, at least not some of the children, but it does mean that they will regard her highly enough to know when she really means something, and be calmed by her very presence. They will also feel that they are the center of the universe for their daycare teacher, and will be happy, indeed downright eager, to get up in the mornings to go to daycare!
