So last night I had the opportunity to listen to a doctor giving his recommendations on the water that we drink or the type of waters we should be drinking. I had heard this doctor speak on other topics and trust what he has to say, so I tuned in. When he started to describe just how much of our bodies are made up of water, you do begin to understand the importance of consuming water. If I’m going to drink it, I would like to drink water that is good for me, wouldn’t you?

He started by taking about hard water vs soft water. Hard water is tap water that comes from either the city water source or well water and contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. Soft water, not to be confused with soft water, is low in concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions. Not to my surprise he stated that both kinds were not the best for us.

Spring water was discussed. He was not to thrilled with spring water since it is taken from underground aquifers that utilizes rainfall and snow melt as its source. Since our rain and snow is no longer pure due to pollution and chemicals in our soil. So he said to try to avoid it if at all possible.

What about all the different bottled water available on the grocery store shelves, he was asked? They all boast about how good they are for you. Not True. None of what the advertisers are telling us is true. Bottled Water has become big business in this country and non of them are overseen by any government agency or the FDA, so they can put just about any type of water in those little plastic bottles and say what ever they want about how it’s pure, clean, refreshing, healthy. The fact is, they are no better than other water sources and they are filling our landfills with an enormous amount of plastic that will be around for hundreds of years.

Then there is the issue of the carcinogens that are release into the water from the plastic if it is allowed to get hot, say in a locked car on a warm sunny day. These carcinogens are being investigated as a source of breast cancer. Can you imagine, drinking lots of water, thinking you are doing yourself a favor, only to find out that it caused breast cancer in women who had to fight for their life. Maybe that is why more breast cancer is being reported in men these days?

So now I’ve just got to know. We shouldn’t drink tap water. We shouldn’t drink rainwater. We shouldn’t drink bottled water. Yet water is something we absolutely have to have in order to live. Where do we get the best quality water to consume? Distilled Water.

Distilled water is water that has been boiled and then the steam produced is recollected. The heating process removes the chemicals and minerals and leaves behind the purest form of water. When you boil water is leave a white or yellow crusting behind, that is the chemicals that were in the water. Boiling the water also kills any bacteria that my have been present.

Now I had heard that distilled water was not good for you to drink on a regular basis, so I was totally confused. That was until I discovered "Blowing the Lid Off Distilled Water Myths". So now I am in search of a home distiller.

Drinking tap water or bottled water does definitely not thrill me and if I can make my own pure water for about 25 cents per gallon, then I believe it is worth my time and effort. Anytime I can send one less piece of plastic to the landfill or pay for a product that is full of hype, I am willing to go the extra mile. How about you?
