It is no secret how much technology has changed our lives. The use of computers and other equipment now dominate a significant part of our daily lives and there’s no denying that they are very efficient and powerful tools. Computer technology has led to the discovery of networks and consequently the Internet, a vastly powerful tool that can keep the whole world entertained and informed. The Internet, as is very apparent in this decade, is now a must-have for every business. It has affected businesses so much such that the audience to which business owners and promoters used to cater to has now expanded beyond the physical and into the digital realm.

Back then, people used fax machines and direct mail to communicate. But now, emails are as common and as normal as eating lunch. Before, people used to invest heavily in print ads like flyers and full color brochures and newsletters to keep people informed on new products or services they might have. Now, however, the whole world can feast their eyes on updates, the complete product line and services of any business they wish to know more of. Information is traveling at a speed 100 times than how it used to 5 years before.

Along with the 24/7 availability and accessibility of the World Wide Web paired with the inexpensive development of websites for an online presence, businesses have also started investing heavily on online advertising. Paid ads, email marketing, pay-per-click, directories, there’s now an entire slew of methods and media to advertise online. The latest addition to this list is the steep rise of blog usage and news feeds proliferation which has even further raised the bar in online advertising competition. Now, the Internet not only exists to entertain and inform. For most business owners and advertising agencies, they’ve found another market to penetrate and consummate.

But being a business owner, we should be aware of the fact that building a website is not enough. Like business brochures and newsletter printing, more thought still has to go into designing websites. Regardless if its brochures, newsletters, postcards, flyers, websites, or online ads, all these marketing vehicles still represent one thing—your business.

Print advertising is still as effective as before and the introduction of a strong online market doesn’t require businesses to extinguish the efforts they put into printed ads. Instead, it even poses quite a challenge to promoters since they now have more media to choose from and develop a strategy on. And according to the principles of branding, it should not be forgotten that all marketing tools we get into, online or offline, should bear the same message, appeal and mood that’s in tune with the overall identity we want the public to perceive the business.

The latest developments are always the exciting ones especially since online developments are quite astonishing. However, we shouldn’t get caught up in the excitement and lose focus on the more solidly-rooted methods that have been tried over time. We should still keep a sane sense of balance and focus with our eyes still dead-set on the end-goal. More exposure leads to more traffic which translates to more consumers. And on the same note, standout and consistent designs communicate a solid identity, a solid brand that can be equated to a more sound business identity and presence both off the internet and on it.
