Before you start decorating your home you should ask yourself "how can I make this room reflect who I am?" To get an idea of how to start decorating a room, it’s great to have an inspiration piece. This piece could be a picture that you love, a pillow, a vase or some other home accessory or even a piece of furniture that evokes a certain feeling every time you look at it. If it has colors that you love or evokes a certain feeling, use it. This is your starting point. Naturally, a room that reflects who you are will have the colors or feeling that you love. Don’t pay so much attention to whether you’re putting together the right pieces or colors, or be concerned that you’re not in style. The point to decorating is to make your home feel like "YOURS". If you have to live with it, you should love it. Besides, if it feels right to you, more than likely, it will feel right to all who enters. Trust yourself!

As an example, you may have a picture that has yellows, oranges, greens, browns and reds in it. You just love this picture and want to build a living room around it. The picture probably has a background color that is complementary to all the other colors in the picture. In a room, consider your walls and your flooring as your background. Paint your walls a complementary color or even a neutral color to the colors in the picture. Your floor color should either blend or compliment your wall color. Let’s say you paint the walls a deep tan. That’s a good neutral background for all the other colors in your inspiration piece. You already have sage green furniture that goes perfectly with the picture. Now all you have to do is accessorize. Curtains, pillows, accent furniture, accessories, can be any of the colors in your inspiration piece. Use your imagination and use the color combinations that make you feel good in that space.

It’s not hard to decorate a room when given a little thought. Find your inspiration piece, keep it simple, use a combination of your inspiration colors or use just one for your accents, and have fun making the room your own!
