As the nation's economy enters a possible recession, more people are looking for ways to earn money online. There are quite a few benefits to working from home, particularly with the price of gas nearing $3.50 per gallon. Although there are quite a few ways to earn money on the Internet, one of the easiest ways to do so is through affiliate marketing.

In the field of affiliate marketing, an individual joins a profit sharing program offered by a business to help market that company's products. The individual, referred to as an affiliate, can help sell the company's goods or services in several ways, including direct mail, blogging, a product review Web site or through pay per click advertising. If a shopper purchases the product through a link provided by the individual, the affiliate gets a portion of the sales price.

How can one get started in affiliate marketing? You might search for the Warrior Forum, a Web site devoted to helping people earn money on the Internet. Many different books have been written on Internet marketing, and quite a bit of documentation is available for free on the Internet. Alternatively, a Search on Google on the topic will probably return enough information to keep any reader busy for quite a while.

Although everyone who works as an affiliate has his or her own techniques for making sales, most marketers use the following methods:

Pick a product. You may see better results if you stay with products that interest you or products that you know something about. The market is competitive, so the more you know about the items you are promoting the more successful you will be. Clickbank, eBay, and Amazon all have worthwhile programs that are easy to join, as do many other large companies such as Dell Computer. There are literally thousands of companies online that offer affiliate programs.

Create a small Website or blog. Search engines particularly like blogs, and often update their index several times a day with blog updates. A Website or blog that reviews a number of products in a particular niche and recommends those that are especially good or useful are often successful. A Website or blog are perfect for promoting products of all types.

Advertise the Website so that buyers can locate it. There are quite a few free or inexpensive ways to promote a Website. You could try buying search engine traffic via pay per click advertising on Yahoo!, Google, or MSN. You ought to consider joining a forum that is devoted to your area of interest. A simple Google search for "name-of-niche forum" will likely return several of them. You can create articles about your topic and submit them to article directories. Each article may contain a "bio box" that contains a hyperlink to your Website.

Affiliate marketing isn't necessarily a source of fast money, but a lot of people earn money each day using the methods outlined above. The techniques are fairly easy to learn, do not take a lot of time, and don't cost a lot of money. In a difficult economy, those are certain benefits.
