One of the most powerful forms of cancer-prevention and cancer management exercises is qi gong, a gentle form of healing exercises from China that is similar to Tai Chi.

Qi gong movements not only help us to increase our levels of oxygen to detoxify the body but also specifically impact internal organ systems in a focused way.

For example, some qi gong movements target the immunity system by working the lung and large intestine energy pathways, said to be related in the Chinese medicine system to abundant immunity and the ability to heal more quickly after surgery or when faced with challenges such as cancer.

Please see the immunity qi gong instructions at the end of this article.

Other qi gong movements, such as the Taoist Five Kidney movement, target the reproductive organs to improve fertility, protect against reproductive pathologies, such as enlarged prostate, prostate cancers, ovarian cysts and fibroids and cervical/ovarian cancers.

There are other qi gong movements that target the spleen and stomach and can be combined with qi gong self massage to reduce nausea (often experienced by people who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation).

A balanced qi gong routine will gently work all of the internal organs to revitalize health and create strength beyond cardiovascular or muscular levels.

When searching for a qi gong instructor to address prostate cancer or other reproductive organ pathologies, ask if the person has a background with clinical applications of qi gong. Such teachers are trained to customize movements to specifically address different types of cancer.

Thirty minutes a day is optimal to gain health benefits, but even shorter periods of exercise will enhance health. I advocate 1-3 minutes of qi gong gently interspersed throughout your day to get a total of 30 to 45 minutes of qi gong movement daily. In this way, people do not have to set aside a time for the practice of qi gong but can integrate it naturally into their lives to use it as a powerful healing tool.

Qi Gong Self Massage that Builds Immunity Energy

This set of qi gong self massage comes from my article on healing depression naturally featured on "Ezinearticles.com" and in my monthly newsletter, Health Prosperity:

Large Intestine Pathway: Massaging this energy pathway helps to facilitate release of sadness, grief or disappointment. It also stimulates the metal organ of the large intestine to help build immunity.

To begin the massage, use your right hand to vigorously tap and slap the top side of the left index finger from nail bed along the finger towards the hand and wrist.

Continue tapping and slapping along the top of the wrist to the top side of the elbow. Continue tapping along the top of the upper arm to the shoulder and sides of the neck. Massage the area near your right nostril with small circular motions.

Repeat on the right arm with taps and slaps to the top of the right index finger, along the hand to wrist. Continue up to the elbow and along the top of the upper arm to the neck. Massage the area near your left nostril with small circular motions.

There are times when you will want to decrease oxygen to a certain area as with a cancerous tumer, if my memory serves me well. I am not sure that that using qigong for all types of cancer in order to increase the amount oxygen is applicable to all situations.

Christopher Harrison L. Ac. Says
Dear Christopher,

Excellent point. Medical qi gong practitioners customize the movements to vary the levels of oxygen and qi flow to fit specific types of cancer. That is why I recommend that people work with a qi gong teacher who has experience with the clinical applications of qi gong as it relates to specific cancers.

Qi gong as I teach it, has been used successfully in the Stanford Integrative Medicine Department's qi gong programs to address a wide variety of cancer tumors quite successfully because the qi gong does not just modulate oxygen flow but also impacts qi and blood flow to the tumor in a way to encourage decrease in cellular growth.

Dr. Arnold Tayam, Dr. Jerry Johnson and Ken Cohen, are pioneers with these qi gong methods in terms of use in medical facilities in this country. The success in those programs has encouraged MD Anderson, one of the leading cancer institutes in this country, to adopt a qi gong program as part of its wellness center. So again, qi gong is applicable to all situations when care is taken to choose appropriate protocols with qi gong as it is not a "one size fits all" tool and must be customized to the individual.
