Now that you have set up your Web site and are ready to do some business, you have to figure out how to get traffic to your online business. Your income depends on having your customer base well defined and on having the tools in place to make it easy for them to find you. You know your competition is spending money to make money so you have to figure out ways to get the juices going so your customers can buy what they need and want.

So what can you do if you are starting out and don’t have the big budget to invest in advertising and marketing? Well, there are four ways to get started with little or no money.

Write Articles

Writing articles is one of the most effective ways to introduce your business and yourself to your customer base. Online business is all about quality information and articles fulfill a very important need for people on the Web, especially just starting out.

There are many ezines and online article directories that are looking for content and are free repositories for your articles. Though some people suggest outsourcing the actual writing, I would highly recommend you do your own research and your own writing. Some article directories and ezines have original work requirements in their guidelines. It is also a way to brand yourself and your business in a professional manner.

Your articles should be relevant to what your customers are looking for and written so that the material can be easily understood and followed. This establishes your own reputation as a knowledgeable expert who can be counted on as a future and ongoing resource. Offer tips and useful steps to advance your reader’s understanding of the subject matter.

Most article and ezine sites let you include a resource box where you can put biographical information and a link to your Web site. This is a valuable tool to promote your business.

Write a Newsletter

A newsletter is another way to get the word out on your online business and your Web site. You can write original material that includes articles that you have written. There is also the option of using articles written by other experts in your field. These experts will often let you use their material in exchange for mentioning their names in the newsletter. Including material from other sources will establish your newsletter as an important source of expert information and will definitely help brand your business a leader in the field.

Join a Forum and Networked Communities

Join a forum or professional community and participate in the discussions. They are a great learning tool and a great source of helpful information. They are free and provide a very effective way to market yourself and your Web business.

People will see what you know and will begin to turn to you for advice. If you establish yourself as a resource and an expert, you will find traffic gravitating to your site as a trusted source of information and products.
