Medical equipment promises individuals better healthcare through innovative technology. A common question that most hospitals and clinics ask themselves when in the market for medical equipment is whether they should buy new or used. The answer to this seemingly simple question is intricate because of the factors that need to be accounted for before making a decision.

Cost is considered to be the first (amongst others) and most important parameter that would influence the decision. There are cost considerations to factor into the equation that go beyond the individual price of the equipment. Therefore, keeping the cost factor as constant, lets weigh the advantages of buying new medical equipment against used.

New medical equipment comes with a manufacturer's OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) warranty, which is a promise of indemnity against defects, under normal condition of use. An OEM warranty typically covers the equipment’s hardware and software components, thus ensuring a complete peace of mind. Used/refurbished medical equipment usually comes with a time limited warranty offered by resellers, and many times does not cover all hardware and software defects. Extended warranty might be an option, but would mean additional cost.

Further, New equipment comes with the added advantage of better post sales service wherein all the technical queries are handled directly by the original equipment manufacturer or in conjunction with your distributor. The Manufacturer’s staff has the technical acumen and training to provide sound help and advice. On the other hand, used medical equipment users may have to contact the reseller, who might lack the requisite skills and expertise.

Availability of spare parts and accessories is another cause for concern. Spare parts and accessories can be readily procured for brand new equipment throughout its stipulated lifetime. A vast network of authorized dealers and repair centers act as an added benefit. Refurbished equipment's parts and accessories may be difficult to source as they become obsolete. This in turn may render the equipment unfit for use.

Advancements made in the field of medical science technology are constantly incorporated into new equipment. This equipment serves a vital role in providing healthcare to many and have enabled health care professionals in saving human life. Used equipment sometimes lacks the latest technology and may not be apt for use under various circumstances, or may fail to deliver when needed the most.

Lastly, insurance claims are also an important consideration when making a decision. Oftentimes is far easier for healthcare providers to make insurance claims when working with equipment that is operating with the latest technologies.

Because of these factors the majority of healthcare professionals pursue new medical equipment over used.
