The Internet has become an important part of people’s lives. Whether it is for conducting banking transactions, for seeking information or for online purchases, the Internet provides an easy solution within a few clicks. For an Internet user, the wide range of choices available on the Internet also means a problem of “too many options”. For instance, people may require specific information regarding a subject, but the Internet would bring up thousands of sites for each search term. There are times when Web site listings seem to reshuffle. When a subject is keyed in at one time, a certain Web site opens, wherein at other times, a different one opens.

This reshuffling phenomenon of search engines is due to an activity known as search engine optimization or SEO. This is a technique used by Web site owners to improve the ranking of their Web sites and thereby drive more traffic to their sites. The term “SEO” is also used to refer to consultants and experts who perform these optimization assignments as per a client’s requirements. The client is typically a Web site owner.

Besides optimizing sites, SEO experts write informative content for Web sites. They are also capable of providing advice on Web site structural designs and help locate related listings where a particular search engine is best suited. The technique of search engine optimization started a decade ago. Initially, this process was much simpler, wherein a Webmaster had to only submit Web sites on the Internet to specific directories where the information would be stored.

If a Web site is listed at the top, the chances of a net user clicking on it are higher. The more the visits drawn by a Web site, the more its popularity and profitability. Site owners also have the option of paying for clicks that bring traffic from other sites to their own sites. Every additional click results in higher listings and they can choose click-through advertising. However, this is an expensive form of marketing Web sites.

In spite of the increase in popularity and demand for search engine optimizers, a few experts have been known to practice unethical means to optimize results. It is important to stay far from such practices, which involves manipulating the search engines to achieve top listings. The success in such situations is often short-lived and could result in the sites being banned. Classic search engine optimization techniques focus on understanding the net user’s usage of search terms and inserting those key words on the site. This results in improving the relevance of a Web site to a given key search term and thereby the site ends up on top of the listings. Usage of SEO is a vital tool for e-commerce companies.
