The American Eskimo is a member of the non-sporting group of AKC classifications, as well as a member of the spitz family or Nordic breeds. It is almost certainly from the European spitzes, including the white German Spitz, the white Keeshound, the white Pomeranian and the Volpino Italiano (white Italian Spitz).
The American Eskimo was very popular for use in trick-dog acts during the 19th century. They performed in traveling circuses throughout the United States. One reason for its circus success was the sparkling white coat and quickness. They also possessed an innate intelligence, high trainability and unsurpassed agility, which made them perfect for performing circus acts. As the circus dogs traveled across American the American Eskimo dog breed became more and more popular.
