Getting a higher search engine rank does require some skill, but it is not rocket science. Read on to learn some easy to apply tips for improving your search engine placement and attracting more visitors to your site from the search engines.

Search engine traffic is the most targeted type of traffic that you could hope for. What better visitors can you get than visitors who searched for what your website provides. One way to do this is to use pay per click advertising such as Google Adwords or Yahoo Search Marketing, but not everyone has the budget for this. Another way to do it is to earn your way on what is known as an organic search.

So how do you do that?

1. The first thing you need to do is identify what your competition is doing. Most websites will allow you to look at their homepage, right click with your mouse, click on view source, and then you can see the meta tags, which include keywords that they are targeting.

2. The next step is to develop a very comprehensive keyword list of your own. You can start by using the primary key words that your competitors are using. After this you can start to build up a list of "long tail keyword phrases".

A longtail keyword is a phrase that typically has at least three to four words, often more. You can go to Wordtracker.com and enter your primary keywords to start building a list, and you can also use the Google keyword tool website as well. Whatever way you decide to do this you need to start building a list of a few hundred keywords.

3. The next thing you want to do is to begin to use those keywords in all of your marketing efforts. Your goal is to develop back links to your homepage, inner pages, and blog posts by hyperlinking your keyword phrase to each specific page. It is important that you include a link containing your keywords in the anchor text (clickable text).

You do this by creating content that is built around each individual keyword phrase. For example, if you do a blog post you would want to title it with the keyword phrase in the title, in the introduction and closing paragraphs, and then use variations of it in the body of the article.

4. It is important that you take each page and get those out on the Internet. You can do this by submitting and publishing articles, submitting your website to directories, exchanging links and social bookmarking.

This becomes search engine bait, which is the key to getting your website, blog posts, and inner pages to the top of the search engines for those specific keyword phrases.

5. The final thing you can do is be consistent in your efforts to improve your search engine placement. This is not as hard as it sounds and you do not need to hire a seo expert.

You need to work every day at getting back links targeting hyperlinked keyword phrases and you'll find yourself a ranking on page for as many words as you want. Use these 5 tips for improving your search engine placement and you will see results over time.
