Venice, Florida is a quaint city located along the southwestern coast of Florida, facing the Gulf of Mexico. It is about twenty miles from Sarasota County. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers founded it in 1926. The BLE wanted to build a city that would function as a planned retirement community in the coastal region of Florida. The services of both John Nolan and Prentiss French were employed to plan the city and create the open spaces in the city, respectively.

The city has a larger number of canals than the Italian city after which it was named. Its lovely beaches are a haven for those interested in collecting shells and fossils. They are relatively abundant here due to the ancient shark burial grounds located just offshore. In fact, the recent discoveries of 50-million-year-old shark’s teeth have earned it the name Shark’s Tooth Capital. The flora of Venice, Florida abounds in variety of greens but more particularly sea grapes.

Venice overlooks the old Florida scenery along the Myakka River. The beach offers a nature trail, park playground, restrooms and picnic areas. The city plays host to the “Sharks Tooth and Seafood” festival every August. Shark’s teeth, a sharks’ tooth scramble, and lots more will be on display in the festival. The 750-foot fishing pier has a restaurant and snack bar.

The Caspersen Beach of Venice, Florida is the longest beach in Sarasota County. It is located south of Venice Airport on Harbor Drive. It is an unperturbed beach, with its pristine state still maintained. The Nokomis beach is a quiet family beach. Venice Municipal Beach is one of the best places to find sharks’ teeth and other fossilized material and to have a peek view of coral reef. Venice, Florida merges the natural beauty and splendor into small-town charm.
