If you want to train your cat to use the litter box instead of the carpet, the scratching post instead of raking the sofa with its claws, then read on. We’ve put together some useful tips on how to train your cat to be a well-behaved member of your household.

Take your cat to the vet: Before you start training your kitty, get him/her checked out by your local vet. Make sure your cat is in good health and that it has no hidden health problems. Pet insurance (www.directline.com/pet/) will help cover visits to the vet.

Toilet training: The best way to teach your cat to do its ‘business’ in the litter box is by rewarding him/her when he/she uses it with lots of attention. Don’t punish your cat if it makes a mistake outside the litter box. This will only teach your cat to be afraid of you. If your cat hasn’t quite caught on to using the litter tray, take your kitty to the litter tray several times a day so that it learns to become a habit. Make sure you put your litter box in a place that your cat can access at all times of day and night. Also, keep the litter tray clean and fresh. Cats are fussy even to the point of having a clean litter tray.

No-scratch zone: Cats like to scratch and they’re generally not fussy about what or where they scratch. It is possible to train your cat to use a scratching post instead of your sofa, curtains or bed covers. Most pet shops sell scratching posts but getting your cat to use it, takes a little time and training. Cats don’t like getting their claws snagged so try covering your furniture with netting or tulle. Cats also don’t like the texture of tinfoil or the scent of Citrus. So if the tulle or netting doesn’t work, try to deter them with tinfoil or citrus.

Training Tips: When training your cat, turn off the radio or TV so that your cat can recognise the sound of your voice. Use your cat’s name often so that they can respond to you. The best time to train your cat is just before it’s time to eat. That way you can reward them with their food. You should set regular mealtimes for your cat so that it learns when to come home and it makes it easier to call him/her inside.
