Keyword density describes the number of the times a particular keyword is used in the content or the webpage. It is expressed as a percentage of the number of keywords used to the total words used in the content or the webpage. It is one of the important things that Google Crawler takes account of while ranking the pages in the search engine pages. This is an indication of how relevant your content would be for the keyword that is being searched. But, a word of caution here - over using of the keywords with just the intention of boosting your rank get you penalized and you might lose the rank because of the same. Hence one has to take care of the optimum keyword density that can be used in a single page.

For instance - over repetition of the keywords after keywords when detected by the search engine crawlers can mark your site as either an artificial site or as a spam site. This will ultimately cost you your ranks.

Hence one needs to take care and avoid overusing of the keywords with the sole intention of getting rank. Make your contents relevant instead. This would probably give you a good impression for the people visiting your site and which might infect interest them to repeat their visit.

How to collect you keyword density?

If you have content with 100 words excluding the HTML codes used in the webpage, and your keyword appears five times in the content. The keyword density is got by expressing the number of the times the keywords appears (say 5 here) as a percentage of the total number of words in the content (say 100 here). Hence the overall keyword density would be 5 divided by 100 = 0.05 or which is 5%. Usually, Search engine crawlers limit the use of keyword density between 3 to 5%. And once this limit is exceeded, and then there is a fair chance

that the search engine might deem the certain webpage as spam. So to be on the safer side and to make maximum use, keep your keyword density within 3 to 5%.

A simple way to check the keyword density is through word processing software such as Microsoft words or word perfect.

1. Copy and paste the content of the page you want to find the particular keyword density.

2. Select all and using the 'word count' feature of the software (MS word) in the 'Tools' menu bar you can count the number of words in your selected content.

3. Using the find function in the edit menu, click on the 'replace' tab and type the keyword for which you want to find the density. Just 'Replace' the keyword with the same word, so that your text doesn't change. Once you are done through this, you will get a count of the number of the times the keyword has been replaced.

Now you can use this to easily find your keyword density.
