From the slapstick comedy, acrobatics and martial arts in Jump to the the international percussion sensation in Stomp, there's something for everyone in the current Off-Broadway event shows that are on offer. So after booking our discount flight tickets to New York, we decided to investigate what New York event shows were showing that were not on Broadway, and to our delight we found a great selection.
This international percussion sensation that arrived at New York's Orpheum Theatre, 126 Second Avenue, over eight years ago, continues its phenomenal run. Stomp is a high-energy, percussive symphony coupled with dance, played entirely on non-traditional instruments, such as garbage can lids, buckets, brooms and sticks. Tony N' Tina's Wedding invites you, the audience, to be a guest at the affair. The hilarious, interactive comedy begins with a ceremony, followed by a rousing reception that includes dancing to a four-piece band, champagne toasts, a full pasta dinner and a slice of the wedding cake. Showing at the Edison Hotel, 221 West 46th Street.
The Awesome 80s Prom is a brand-new, blast-from-the-past party in the style of Tony N' Tina's Wedding and The Donkey Show set at Wanaget High's senior prom. Showing at the Webster Hall, 125 East 11th Street, if you're lucky, you'll even get to dance with a cheerleader. And this time, you don't have a curfew. Gazillion Bubble Show is an "unbubblelievable" interactive stage production, showing at the New World Stages 340 West 50th Street, the first and only of its kind, complete with fantastic light effects, lasers and jaw-dropping masterpieces of bubble artistry.
Jump brings the combination of slapstick comedy, acrobatics and martial arts to the stage for the first time ever in live performance in this highly unique theatre spectacle that has been described as "Jackie Chan meets Charlie Chaplin." You'll find it at the Union Square Theatre, 100 East 17th Street.
Blue Man Group presents Tubes, a "potpourri of physical stunts, visual gags, art commentary, audience participation and all-out sensory assault," as described by Time magazine. Showing at the Astor Place Theatre 434 Lafayette Street, Blue Man is a curious, gentle being from inner space who wants to "blesh" with the audience through sound and colour. Alternatively, Fuerzabruta breaks free from the confines of spoken language and theatrical convention. In this new show, both performers and audience are immersed in an environment that floods the senses, evoking pure visceral emotion in a place where individual imagination soars. Shows at the Daryl Roth Theatre, 101 East 15th Street.
Well that's a tour of the event shows that are showing, off New York's Broadway at present, more details at www.travel05.co.uk
