The oil sands project is one of great concern especially to environmentalists, many thousands of acres of land are going to be deforested, water is being contaminated, many new advancements are being researched measures are trying to be put in place, attempting to ensure the environmental concerns are minimized however the threat continues. Not long ago over 500 ducks were killed when they landed on one of the toxic ponds. Since the 1970's there has been seepage from toxic tar island dyke in to the soil, and more recently a leek of toxic contaminants was discovered going into the Athabasca River, a main water supply for Alberta, BP also wants a piece of the pie us they have recently to bought into the oil sands projects. Greenpeace is calling the tar sands, the greatest environmental crime, bitumen has a higher carbon content than crude oil therefor its harmful emissions while being refined, processed and burned will be greater, wouldn't it be great if the money and resources were put to use seeking and implementing fuel alternatives? These are all factors adding to the world wide soil contamination.
