David Binder, former Balkan Correspondent for the New York Times, wrote the foreword to Media Cleansing and said: "Peter Brock is the first to undertake a full scale investigation: The repulsive, even odious task of charting transgressions by correspondents covering the three-sided 1992-1995 Bosnian conflict… This includes outright fabrication, widespread use of dubious and secondhand sources and blatantly one-sided accounts of strife involving at least two and sometimes three sets of combatants." When the book was presented at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Binder suggested that the Pulitzer be revoked from Roy Gutman and John Burns (NYT) or in Binder’s words, "Give Janet Cooke back her Pulitzer."
Are Americans so easily hoodwinked? The answer unfortunately is yes. When articles circled the world that the Serbs had bombed and destroyed Dubrovnik, that lie was repeated six times by Anthony Lewis of the NYT. As it turned out, the Croats burned old auto tires throughout the 15th century walled city. Photographs taken with telephoto lenses made it appear that Dubrovnik was burning.
