I recently did a search of home based businesses that I could set-up. Many of the most visible businesses are multi-level marketing. I am not interested in those businesses. Then there are all of the get rich quick schemes. If they really worked then the authors would not be telling people about them. So what is left?
I took some time to evaluate my strengths. As an educated bi-lingual mother, I know that I interact well with kids. I enjoy teaching them new things. I enjoy teaching them to speak and I am fortunate that I can teach them two languages. I also have a good brain for business and can work well with adults. So I went on the search for the ideal business for bi-lingual speakers. Here is what I found:
I could be a motivational speaker. Highlight that I proficient in both languages and search for businesses in which both of these languages are important. I did the search and found that there were already a number of people out there in that niche. It could be of interest to you, but probably not right for my personality. I also noted that there were many jobs out there for bilingual speakers and I felt like I could always go and get a job. But I wanted to do a business for myself and that meant that I need to keep searching. Then I struck gold. I live in Australia and in Australia there is great competition to get into the best University. Studying a language is weighted very favorably when the marks for University entrance is considered.
So I could teach students a second language. I could become a language tutor. But, I am smart enough to know that I need some structure and system. I went searching for the system. I found three that were worth investigating. The first was Kumon. Kumon is one of the most recognized names in education franchising. According the Entrepreneur magazine, the price ranges US$30K - US$110K with an ongoing royalty of US$30 per student per month. I excluded this from the search because of the size of the royalties and the total investment is out of reach for most of us. Then I looked at Language Leaders Franchising, the price ranges from US$18K to US$107K. I also excluded this because it was still a little out of my price range. I started having discussions with friends and they recommended I look at company called Language Champs.
They were offering, at the time of publishing, a language tuition system including translation services for AUS$5,000 +GST and then $1,000 annually after the first year. By the end of the first year I would know how successful it was and could determine whether I renewed with them. The risk was very low. Their materials were solid and they had an operational centre that I could go and visit. They have the following languages which gave me confidence that their system could work across languages:
french school melbourne
german school melbourne
italian school melbourne
spanish school melbourne
chinese school melbourne
polish school melbourne
This could be the ideal business for a bi-lingual speaker.
