There are many women who end up dealing with acne during their pregnancy. This often occurs because the hormone levels become elevated and this can cause problems with acne. Since everything in a woman's body can possibly be absorbed by the baby, it is very important that you are careful with the treatment options you use while you are pregnant. In fact, many doctors recommend that you don't use most of the acne medications out there while you are pregnant. More than likely you'll develop acne during your first trimester, although sometimes acne can plague you all the way until the birth of your baby.

If you are thinking about using an over the counter medication to treat your acne, you should make sure to talk with your obstetrician. One common ingredient in acne treatments is salicylic acid, and it can do quite a bit of harm to an unborn baby. However, usually it is safe to use benzoyl peroxide, although you should still consult with your doctor before you use it while pregnant.

One of the best things that you can do to treat your acne while you are pregnant is to make sure that you wash your face two times each day, and then rinse well when you are done. After you cleanse, take a moisturizers that is oil free and apply it gently to your face to keep your skin moist and soft. You will also find that exercise can also help to increase your circulation, which is great for your skin and it will help you stay in shape while you are pregnant as well. If you feel you need to use an astringent cleanser, instead of using over the counter astringents that are full of very harsh chemicals, consider going with witch hazel instead, which is all natural.

Going natural with acne prevention and treatment is a great idea while you are pregnant. Using honey and cinnamon paste or even lemon juice on your skin can really help. You just apply it at night before you go to bed, and then in the morning you just rinse it off. It won't hurt you or your baby. Another options is using tea tree oil; however, consult your doctor before using this natural treatment. Eating a good diet that has plenty of vegetables and fruits can help as well. Drinking a lot of water can be a natural way to treat your acne, especially since your skin tends to get a bit dry during your pregnancy. When you're eating, try to make sure that your diet is rich in great anti oxidants as well, which helps to get rid of the toxins in your body that can cause acne problems.

However, if you still think that you may need an acne treatment while you are pregnant, make sure you talk to your doctor. A little vanity is not worth hurting your unborn child, so be very careful.
