If you have a job or family obligation that requires you to relocate to a new city with little notice, it can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety. Whether you are packing and driving yourself in a matter of a few days or you plan on hiring a moving company, there are still some things that you need to keep with your person to ensure a seamless transition. You can do without furniture, knickknacks and unessential clothing, but things like medications and sensitive documents need to be kept close at hand and be accounted for. If you get organized and know what to take with you, the entire process can be an exciting time.

Before you even begin packing, make a list of the things that you feel you cannot do without. Walk around your house and write down the things that you use for day-to-day living. Gather all of these items and place them in one area to see how much space they actually take up. Next, determine if it will all fit in the vehicle you are driving. If not, you will need to begin eliminating items on the basis of their everyday importance. If you are flying, you can even box up most of your must haves and have them shipped along with you on the plane for an extra fee so you will have your essentials at your new place as soon as you arrive.

Before leaving, select the wardrobe you will need for the next week. If you do not need to work immediately, pack comfortable, climate-friendly clothing that requires little care to be presentable. If you need to report to a new job right away, try to pack outfits that are classic mix and match and will not need ironing. Otherwise, you may need to pack an iron also which can take up precious room in a small vehicle.

Sensitive documents and paperwork are also important to keep with you when you move to a new city. With the rash of identity thefts, you do not want to leave this type of information unguarded or susceptible to loss. If you have too many documents to make this feasible, be sure to pack the bulk of the papers in a locked container with your new address and phone number prominently displayed. Then take the papers that you cannot afford to lose and the billing statements that you will need for the next couple weeks. Some papers and documents to consider keeping with you are forms of identification, a Social Security card, birth certificate, passport, any reservation documentation, your new lease or mortgage papers and the phone numbers and addresses of contacts.

It is vital to keep your medications readily available. Whether it is vitamins or an important medication to manage your health, keeping these with you at all times will help you stay on your schedule. If you have several prescription medications for you or your family, make a list of them and write down the information from the medicine bottle. You will need this information in order to get your prescriptions refilled or replaced at a pharmacy in your new town.

Moving can be a fun and exciting event. When you need to pack at the last minute though, it can be a challenging and stressful task. Getting organized and carefully thinking through your daily routine will help you remember the important items that you use everyday. Keeping these essentials close at hand will ensure a pleasant experience for all involved.
