I often hear this term bandied about, "a serious woman business owner." Does this describe you?

Being a serious woman business owners has to do with your time commitment but it also it has to do with your willingness to learn new strategies and ideas and incorporate them into your business easily and without emotional connection.

It also means that you’re committed to making a full-time income that pays your bills, puts money in savings every month, allows money for fun things like travel, a newer car, a nice home and enough money to re-invest back into your business for growth. As a serious business woman myself, that's what I've created over the years. But it's not all smooth sailing

At times learning certain lessons were like swallowing bitter medicine. My immediate reaction was, "It shouldn't be this way." But I realize now I was basing my opinion on inexperience and my emotions. Let me explain.

I was raised to have a good vocabulary. My mom never went to college but she was well-read and encouraged all four of us kids to develop excellent language skills. Add to that the fact that I love to write and I developed an extensive vocabulary.

Several years ago I decided I wanted to teach a workshop. So, I had to write a sales letter to attract attendees. No problem - I'm a great writer I thought. That should be easy. So I wrote what I thought was an amazing letter. I was proud of it. I loved the way I wove a tapestry of words yada, yada, yada... I got emails from people telling me what a great letter it was - but no sales. I was crestfallen.

Then someone told me when writing a sales letters your vocabulary shouldn't exceed an eighth grade level. I was also told sales letters are supposed to follow a formula. Yikes! How could I do THAT? I put so much pride into my writing. What was wrong with people? Shouldn't they want to read something well-written and creative rather than the same ol' hype?

I finally realized I was taking my sales letter too personally. I had way too much ego invested rather than looking at reality. I was ignoring the people who knew more than I did, and saying the market was wrong, not me.

Finally I asked myself - what was my motive? Was I interested in creative writing or filling my workshop? It was an emotional struggle - but I decided I wanted sales. Begrudgingly at first I followed the advice of people with decades more experience when it came to writing sales letters. I changed my writing significantly. Sales shot up. I was amazed.

As a woman business owner dedicated to success, I had to back off my emotions and how I wanted things to be and look more carefully at what worked. If you want the financial and personal benefits of being a business owner it’s wise to learn from more experienced business owners. Listens to people with experience and a track record of success. Learn from people with more experience. Be willing to have an open-mind and try new things.
