Affirmations are positive statements which are getting popular these days for self improvement. If repeated enough number of times over a long period, these leave a positive deeper impact on your personality and can create whatever you believe. For these to work for you, you need to follow a proper system which I am gonna describe in fairy detail.

Before I go further, I need to explain what the characteristics of affirmations are.

What are affirmations
Affirmations are usually short statements and fulfill two conditions simultaneously:

  1. These describe situations as here and now.
  2. These must be either true or false.
Here are some good examples of affirmations:
  • I am strong.
  • I am week.
  • I am powerful.
  • I am dumb.
  • I am not good.
  • I am not powerful.
  • Everyday in everyway I am getting better and better.
If you look upon the above statements these are all either true or false and are describing the situations as here and now. The ones using the words no, not etc are sometimes referred to as negative affirmations and rest are positive affirmations or simply affirmations.

The following sentences don’t qualify as affirmations:
  • Am I not good?
  • Am I rich?
  • What are affirmations?
  • I was strong.
A quick look upon the above sentences will tell that these are not describing situations as here and now and are not either true or false.

Now that we have the clear cut definition of affirmations. Let’s talk about our mind.

Two Minds
As per psychology our mind is divided in two parts: conscious and subconscious. The conscious mind is responsible for reasoning and thinking. It’s limited in its capacity. On the other hand subconscious mind is extremely powerful. But it lacks reasoning ability. Besides it can’t think and apply logic.

How your minds work
Your subconscious mind can create anything you ask it to do. Now questions which usually come to your mind are:
  • What is hindering the subconscious from doing its job?
  • Why are my wishes not granted?
  • What’s the ultimate problem?
Well here is the catch. Just for your safety, nature always puts some safeguards to the sources of power. Here also nature has provided a cap on your subconscious. That cap is your conscious mind. Yes your own conscious mind. Conscious mind acts as a guard to your subconscious. It filters any information before sending it to the subconscious. Subconscious mind’s sole job is to acts upon the commands given.

Subconscious will create anything which it believes and it believes whatever is believed by conscious mind. How are the commands given to the subconscious:
  • By making our conscious mind to believe something.
  • By giving commands directly to subconscious without the knowledge of conscious mind. In that case it believes whatever it’s told.
  • By making conscious mind ignore the commands through repetition.
Here is what happens when you hear or repeat a command enough number of times. Either your conscious mind will believe those commands or it will ignore them. In both of the cases the commands reach your subconscious and it starts acting upon them. The results? Astonishingly real. You are what you want.
