The greeting card has been around for centuries. In the early 1400's hand made paper greeting cards were found throughout Europe. Prior to that messages were etched on wood and stone. Papyrus scrolls were used by the Egyptians to send their greetings. It wasn't until the 1850's that the greeting card started to grow into the incredible industry we know today. Two of the main reasons for this popularity were the means to put greeting cards into printing production and the introduction of the postage stamp on May 1, 1840 in Great Britain.
The greeting card industry didn't hit our shores until 1856. This is when German born immigrant, Louis Prang began printing greeting cards in his small lithograph shop in Boston. He's also credited with creating the Christmas card. It took until 1862, however, before the custom of exchanging Christmas cards with friends and family became a common practice.
