One of the biggest hot buttons for a lot of people in just about every market imaginable is the word "new". In network marketing, that word seems to rivet people's attention. The perception is that the best MLM business opportunity is a new one, a "ground-floor opportunity." Some people worry that they'll miss out, because what is "new" today will not be new next month. That puts the pressure on to act now, or you may well be too late to make your fortune.

You find another word in MLM: "prelaunch". Prelaunch is before ground-floor and makes people salivate with excitement. If you just advertise these words with some idea that sounds even remotely plausible and which has some nice bells and whistles, it's likely to attract massive attention. Are you interested?

OK. But the problem is most businesses fail, especially new businesses. The chance of a new business surviving 2 years is certainly under 20%, and maybe much lower. Why, because new businesses have problems. You might commit 100% to a new business, but others won't and as soon as they get a jug with the label upside down, they'll figure these guys don't know what they're doing, and they'll quit.

Every business needs time to iron out the kinks. Nothing works exactly as you have planned it. If you join when they're new, things will go wrong, your people will get discouraged, and it will be hard to keep them. What is the solution?

Wait. If you've found a really got opportunity, it will be an even better opportunity in 2 years, because it will have established more credibility and trust with stakeholders. And most of the bugs will have been found and fixed. So you are better off to give it some time to play out, rather than jumping on that "new" bandwagon.

What could be worse than working with people you don't like? That's one of the big reasons people want their own business, to escape from a job working with people they just don't respect or like. Unfortunately, some people get desperate when they're building their network marketing group, and they sign up anybody they possibly can. In my experience, you have to define your standards at the start and stick to them.

One idea that works with a prospect is to ask yourself, "Is this someone I'd want to go on a 30-day cruise with?" Part of the value of MLM is that you get to pick the people you will work closely with. Why on earth choose people you just don't like? Instead, only go with people who you think would be a lot of fun to be around, who share your dreams and goals.

It's exciting to make new friends you really like and then to be able to support them in achieving their lifetime goals. It's depressing to have to talk again and again to an unmotivated person with whom you share nothing in common, and listen to them gripe about the business you love. Best practice is to set your standards firmly in your mind when you talk to people.

You'll find more great information on these subjects in the ebook "Success In 10 Steps" by Michael Dlouhy. After years on the market and a ton of downloads, this ebook is now a staple which many MLMers use as a lead-generator to build their business. They no longer send their money to "lead brokers". Why should they when they can generate their own?

Part of the problem with buying leads is, you never know for sure what you are getting, and mistakes can be very expensive. The "Success In 10 Steps" ebook system lets you generate your own leads, targeting current MLMers who aren't satisfied with their results. Network marketers love the MLM stories, and it has become very popular. Plus, the author never talks about any specific company or product, so it has become a great lead generator for people with many different MLM companies.
