1) Set them up to succeed. When you're training them, understand that they don't know English and they need your guidance. Set up the sessions so they always end on a good note.

2) Spend quality time with your dog. This could be play time, rubbing belly time, going on walks, whatever you and your dog can do together.

3) Spit in their food. I know it sounds weird, but your spit has your scent on it, and if you spit in their food before they eat it, they will smell your scent. It gives them the idea that it was your food, but you'll share because your dog is a pack member.

4) Keep that pack mentality. Your dog will be more comfortable if you're in the alpha position. If you give them all that is good in the world like food and play and treats. If you give them boundaries that they cannot cross. If you are consistent, calm, assertive, and trustworthy.

5) Discipline them when they need it. If they growl at you, make sure they know who's really the boss. Ignore them, put them in time out. Let them know that your boundaries for them are firm.

6) Protect them. If there's a scary situation like another dog or a vacuum cleaner, protect your dog. Step in between your dog and the scary thing, and show them that they'll be all right.

7) Introduce them to new things with you. Take them to a dog park, to a farm, to the city, to the beach, to the river. Take them somewhere new and be with them while they explore.

8) Have a routine. Feed them at the same time, go to bed at the same time, go on walks at the same time. Get into a rhythm so they can expect things to happen and so they can look forward to time with you.

9) Don't crate them up forever. Crates are good for night time to keep them safe, and for when you have doctor's appointments or you need to shower. But don't leave them in there for more than 5 hours at a time (and that's assuming they're at least 4 months old!).

10) And last, but never least, love them. Give them attention, give them hugs, give them puppy dog massages. Show them that you care about them. And you can even do this only when your dog is calm to show them you like it when they're calm, or vice versa.
