Symbolic Colors

Every color symbolizes something. Many colors symbolize one thing in one culture and another for a different culture. A good example of this is the color purple, in some nations, purple is the color of royalty. However, in some cultures, purple signifies death. This is why lavender, which is a lighter shade of purple, tends to be more chosen for weddings than the deeper shade of purple. White is the most often used color for weddings, since it symbolizes, purity, good and light. The color blue signifies trust and loyalty, so it is also popular in many different shades for a wedding. Green is the color of nature and trees and signifies growth, harmony and fertility. Yellow and its brighter shades are associated with happiness, joy and energy. Red is a powerful color and signifies different things in it's many shades. Stay away from dark red as it is associated with anger and rage. Other shades of red are associated with love, passion, desire and romance. Brown is associated with stability and masculinity and may be a good contrasting color.

Theme Colors

If you have a theme, then your wedding colors will usually be determined by the theme. For instance, a western wedding might have a mocha and white theme. Or an Asian wedding may have a pink and white theme of cherry blossoms. For a fantasy wedding, just about anything goes.

Seasonal Colors

If your wedding is around a holiday or during a certain season, then your colors may want to reflect that. For instance, a fall wedding should have deeper, richer colors using reds, oranges, browns, golds and bronze. A spring wedding should use paler shades of bright colors and pastels. A summer wedding should have bolder, brighter, primary colors.
