The Salzburg Cathedral is the biggest and largest of all the churches located in Salzburg. The Salzburg Cathedral is undoubtedly most famous for being the church where Mozart was baptized. This grand cathedral dates from the 1620s and stands on the site of a much older church from the 8th century. Interestingly the Salzburg Cathedral has become an important local landmark and its three bronze doors are well known to locals. The three bronze doors symbolize faith, hope and charity.

It is also fascinating to know that in its past the Salzburg Cathedral burned down after being struck by lightning and its reconstruction began a mere three years later. The church has since then experienced at least three extensive building and rebuilding campaigns during the early middle ages.

After its reconstruction, ironically enough the Salzburg Cathedral sustained partial damages during World War II. This occurred when a single bomb crashed through the central dome over the crossing. Repairs were somewhat slow to take place, but restoration was complete by 1959. The Cathedral has since then been ingrained into the Salzburg experience and popularity that it was the main motive of one of the most famous collectors coins: the Austrian 10 euro The Castle of Hellbrunn commemorative coin, minted in April 21, 2004. The reverse side features a portrait of Archbishop Markus Sitticus von Hohenems, holding a construction plan of the Salzburg Cathedral.

As one can see that this Cathedral needs to be visited in person in order to fully appreciate what it stands for and it rich history. It’s recommended that when you plan your trip to Salzburg that you arrange all your accomodatie Sulzburg plans in advance. From this point on, you can either book appartementen Salzburg or hotel Salzburg depending on the length of your stay.

By visiting the Salzburg Cathedral you will be visiting a sacred place that has a somewhat controversial past. This is due to belief that Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich took advantage of (some would say caused) the old cathedral's destruction to demolish the remains and make plans for a huge new structure to reaffirm Salzburg's commitment to the Catholic cause in the wake of the Reformation.

If you would like to take a more personal look at this interesting location and place then you can visit the crypt, as traces of the old Romanesque cathedral that once stood on this spot have been unearthed. The cathedral excavations are entered around the corner (left of the Cathedral entrance). This exhibition of excavation work shows ruins of the original foundation.

If you’re planning a trip to Salzburg then visiting this Cathedral is an absolute must.
