There is a consensus among anybody that knows what they’re talking about when it comes to turbine size. They all agree that small turbines- like those found on home made a windmill- don’t produce a significant amount of energy. But what these people don’t take into account is that a small home made windmill is cheap to make and maintain and for that reason alone is worth the investment. They also neglect to mention that you can build multiple small windmills for cheap.

I’m not talking about an inefficient scrapper windmill. You can build a fairly top of the line windmill with the right instructions. To build a windmill you don’t even need to be all that technical now that the technology is more advanced. However, there is no use building where one doesn’t belong. No matter the expense of the windmill, if the location is bad a home made windmill is just as useless as a fancy one.

Make sure you check your local wind maps to see if your average wind speed is at least 9 mph. If you’re not being conservative with your energy usage then you’re not getting the most out of your ambition to save the planet or save money on your electric bills. Make sure you’ve upgraded all the light bulbs to fluorescent bulbs, clothes washers to driers to gas powered units, windows to double-pane windows, etc, etc, before installing a home made windmill.

Remember that your appliances don’t use electricity-you do. YOU have to be aware of which lights are on where, and which ones should be on and why. Once you make sure that your habits are managed and that your home is efficient without the windmill, it’s time to install that home made windmill.

Technically, you first need government approval but getting it takes no time at all and there’s a good chance somewhere down the line they’ll be paying you for having installed that cheap home made windmill.

Spending all your income on an expensive windmill if you’re just starting out carries a lot more risk than building your own. A Home made windmill is a good place to begin your journey into renewable resources because they’re less of an investment and if done right will yield fantastic results.
