see, this is a topic that is beginning to annoy me. yes, big bamboo hoop earrings and nameplate necklaces started in the 80's, when more east-coast artists dominated the hip-hop scene (it all started in tha bronx, in case any of you forgot) but it's a style that never left the 'hood. mary j. blige wore her doorknocker hoops all through the 90's, and me being from the bronx, this is a style i've grown up seeing. now that i'm 16 i finally can get a pair(my mom made me wait this long) but then i look around and i'm seeing hilary duff wearing a pair (and she knows absolutely nothing about the 'hood, i'm sorry) and people like the pussycat dolls wearing them too. so you can imagine how that must feel, i mean, this is a street style, and to see that this has now become a trend kinda strips this look of it's street cred. but really, this is more than just a style, it's culture, street culture, and when someone like me is seeing instyle magazine doing an article about it, it just feels like this is another thing that "the man" is trying to take from us. i know i'm not the only one that is bothered by this, but i think no one really wants to step up and say something about it.
