Everybody has their favorite kind of dog. It could be anything from a Mastiff to a Mutt. Choosing a new dog can be a fun adventure. Here are some of the most popular breeds today and some of the pros and cons of the breed.

The Labrador Retriever is an all-time favorite. They are a natural family addition. They need to be in the heart of the house. They are a patient, loving companion. They should have plenty of exercise and things to occupy their mind or they may become destructive. They have a reliable temperament and are excellent with children.

Who can resist the adorable little Yorkshire Terrier? The Yorkie can endear itself into anyone’s heart. They are a tiger in a tiny body. They are very clever little nymphs. They are loyal and highly energetic. They are more for older children and adults. They are demanding and need lots of human attention. However, if babied too much they can have emotional problems.

The German Shepherd is one of the most popular dogs for any number of reasons. Whether they are a TV or movie star, guard dog, police dog, drug dog, seeing-eye dog, rescue dog or simply our pet everyone recognizes this breed. They are obedient, fearless and eager to learn. These dogs must have a purpose in life to be truly happy. They are good with children and will defend to the death. They are not as playful as Labs or Retrievers, but they are good faithful, intelligent dogs. They are truly a noble creature.

Golden Retrievers are so named for their cream to golden coats. They are charming and people pleasers. They are easily trained and trustworthy with children. They make good watchdogs but not guard dogs. They are good at hunting, tracking, retrieving and detecting narcotics. They need to be with people to be a happy dog.

Move over Snoopy, the Beagle has found his way to the big screen in Underdog. While being very popular among hunters the Beagle is finding new popularity. They are highly energetic and need appropriate amounts of exercise. They are friendly and have never met a stranger. They hate being left alone. If you will frequently be leaving them alone, consider a pair. Their barking can be very disturbing to others if they are lonely. They are excellent with children and other dogs. Just a good all-around little dog.

The Boxer, so named for his boxing like motions, is a great family pet. They love children. They have an abundance of loyalty. They are playful and energetic. They love to play "hide" with your knick knacks. They are fun to watch when they paw things around the house. They should be taught not to jump on people though, as should all dogs.

The Dachshund, a.k.a. the wiener dog, comes in three sizes and each size has three varieties. No matter which one you choose you are sure to get a lively little hot dog. Not so well suited for small children as they can be irritable and quick to bite. You must watch their weight in order to prevent weight related health issues.

The Poodle is known throughout as a somewhat aristocratic dog. They come in three sizes; toy, miniature and standard. They are proud and elegant dogs. They are one of the easiest to train breeds and love to learn. The standard poodle tends to do better with children than the smaller sizes. They dislike being alone and may show you in some destructive ways. They need to be trimmed and groomed regularly, but this is because they do not shed their hair like other dogs.

Shih Tzu’s are regal little dogs. Originating in Tibet they were kept in Temples as sacred dogs. They were sometimes gifted to the Chinese Emperors of the Manchu Dynasty. The Shih Tzu’s are powerhouses of personality. They love their people and are good with children. They are not demanding and will wait patiently until called. Of course, they would rather be sitting with you though. They make excellent apartment dogs.

The Bulldog has a charm unto himself. Though not a classic beauty they do possess it. They were named "bull" because of their use in bull baiting. An excellent choice as a family dog they are exceptional with children. They are gentle and protective and form strong bonds with their kids. They can be "bull"headed at times but are really big babies. They tend to snore and drool quite a lot. They require minimal grooming.

For every dog of every breed there are those people who seek the individuality of each dog for that special something that will inevitably touch their heart.
