The dictionary definition of shaving is the act of removing hair with the help of a razor. Earlier shaving meant usually removal of hair from the facial area in males but now its purview has considerably changed over the years. Women have also started using razors to remove unwanted hair from their legs and arms.

Shaving can be done with an electric razor or a regular, manual one. It is an easy process but requires some precautions. If the water is warm, the hair absorbs it and becomes softer and it becomes easier to cut. It also leads to relaxation of skin and facial muscles. The best time for shaving is usually after a bath as it leads to easier shaving. In order to get a smooth shave a shaving cream or gel should be applied. This moisturizes and protects the skin and also helps the razor to glide smoothly across the face. It is equally important to use a good razor, which has been warmed under hot running water or warmed in a mug containing hot water.

While shaving the face in the direction of the beard growth, the razor should be rinsed in hot water frequently. Avoid shaving 'against the grain' of the beard in awkward areas such as the chin and under the nose. The blade can be moved sideways across the growth but never against as this pulls the skin in the wrong direction causing small cuts and 'grazing' the skin, which is the most common cause of 'razor burn’.

After shaving it is also important to rinse the face properly and pat it dry with the help of a clean towel. An aftershave lotion can be applied to condition the face giving it a cooling effect. Aftershave lotions with a high level of alcohol content should not be applied to the skin directly after shaving as they may inflame the skin and cause dryness.
