Stay ahead of the pack with these tips about getting more from your car rental.
1. Plan ahead. Don’t wait until the last minute to reserve a car. You’re not the only one with a plan to drive to family, friends, or a vacation spot.
2. Do your homework. If you’re concerned about gas mileage, you might want to call ahead to find out what cars a particular car rental agency stocks. Then you can do your own research about which cars get the best mileage.
3. Negotiate. There are several things you can negotiate with a car rental company. The first of which is making sure that they charge you the going rate for gas when they fill the tank when you return the car. In the past, the rental companies filled the tank and charged you a surcharge for doing so.
4. Say "No" to the extras. Unless you’re winging your road trip, say "No" to the guidance system Use a map. Gadgets are fun, but add to the price of the car rental.
5. Show up early. If your car rental company is on a first-come, first-serve basis, you might want to arrive early so you can look over your car selection. Although the car rental companies wash and vacuum their cars, some look and smell better than others.
6. Do your own body check. The agent who walks you around the car to inspect it for damages does this all day long. Some may be more diligent than others. Walk around with the agent and do your own body-check, mileage check, etc.
7. Don’t just kick the tires. See if the tires are inflated enough so they don’t look as if you’re riding on the rims. Even though much has been made of how this is not an energy plan by the presidential candidates, you’d be surprised how important properly inflated tires adds to your mileage as well as your safety.
8. Road conditions save time and money. Check ahead through Triple A or online to check for road conditions. A road closure can add to the time and money you planned for your trip.
9. Consider traveling with others. If you have room in your car, there may be someone else going your way who could help you with the cost of your trip. Call family and friends. They may just be going your way or know someone who is. Oftentimes, students need a ride home. You might think twice about allowing them to drive your car, but if you do, be sure to have the proper insurance and check their driving record.
10. Slow down. You’ll be amazed how much further you can go on a tank of gas when you drive around 55 miles an hour as opposed to five miles over the speed limit where most people think they’re safe from being pulled over.
Increase your road trip by driving smart.
