Directory submission is an easy way for your site to gain one-way back link. There are hundreds of free web directories available for you to submit. However, not all those submissions will guarantee your web site to get listed. Although it may seem like a very simple process, you should spend some time to prepare your listing (page title, description, etc).

Writing Your Description

Your description should be brief, but at the same time should summarise what your site is about. Include the unique features of your site and make sure the grammar and spelling is right.

  • Avoid starting your description with “this site” or “this blog” or anything similar.

  • Don’t include site title in your description.

  • Avoid using marketing slogans.

  • Don’t copy descriptions from similar sites. Also don’t use the same description as you used in your site.

  • Leave the capital letters to first sentences

Here are some facts that would increase your site’s chance to get listed:

  • Only submit your top-level domain (ex. www.yoursite.com NOT www.yoursite.com/index.html).

  • Don’t use you listing as promotional tool. Avoid including product pricing and special offers.

  • Don’t use terms like; Best site, best information, cool, unlimited and other similar terms.

  • Try not to use free email accounts such as yahoo, hotmail, etc.

  • Don’t use titles that don’t reflect your site. Keep it short and brief.

  • Don’t capitalise all the letters of the title. Only capitalise the first letters of the main words (not To, to, not The, the)

  • Don’t submit sites that promotes hate, pornography, etc.

  • The title should start with word A, The, An, etc.

  • Don’t submit affiliate sites.

  • Only submit once.

Submitting your websites to directories is time-consuming process. Although there are some automated tools available, you should always submit manually. Many directories are equipped with forms that force you to enter randomly generated codes, before finishing your submission process. So these automated tools cannot read these codes. Therefore the submission will result in failure.

If you stick to these recommendations, directories will most likely to accept your submission after their review process. However, the review process may take some time depending on the directories.
