There are many sports magazines that devote coverage to football, both professional and college. With the football season nearing kick-off for 2008, here is a look at the best football magazines and their picks for the season. Top-selling sports magazines include Sports Illustrated Magazine, Sports Illustrated Kids, Sports Weekly, ESPN The Magazine and Pro Football Magazine.

Sports Illustrated is arguably the most definitive sports magazine. The magazine’s hardcore coverage of college football includes the naming of the "Preseason Top 20" each preseason. For the upcoming 2008 season the magazine named the "Top 20" as 1) Georgia, 2) Ohio State 3) USC 4) Missouri 5) Florida 6) Oklahoma 7) Auburn 8) Texas Tech 9) LSU 10) Wisconsin 11) Clemson 12) Tennessee 13) Texas 14) West Virginia 15) Kansas 16) Arizona State 17) BYU 18) Oregon State 19) Pittsburgh and 20) Oregon

Sports Illustrated Magazine also features comprehensive coverage on every college football team including scores, conferences, players, standings, rankings, schedules and stats.

For kids, Sports Illustrated publishes a kids’ edition called Sports Illustrated Kids. This magazine provides much of the same football coverage including scores, players, standings and rankings but pairs this information with kid-friendly profiles, features and factoids.

Sports Weekly is a publication of USA Today newspaper; it covers major and minor league baseball, NCAA baseball, NASCAR and the NFL. The magazine started out as USA Today Baseball Weekly in 1991 but the name was changed in 2002 to accommodate coverage on the NFL.

ESPN The Magazine is published by the ESPN sports network. The sports magazine launched in 1998 is a bi-weekly magazine. The magazine covers MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, college basketball and college football. Similar to Sports Illustrated Magazine’s "Preseason Top 20" rankings, ESPN The Magazine ranks college football teams in its preseason "power rankings" list. For the 2008 preseason ESPN The Magazine has named 1) Georgia, 2) USC 3) Ohio State 4) Florida 5) Oklahoma 6) Missouri 7) Clemson 8) West Virginia 9) LSU 10) Auburn 11) Texas 12) Wisconsin 13) Texas Tech 14) BYU 15) Arizona State 16) Virginia Tech 17) Oregon 18) South Florida 19) Tennessee 20) Penn State as its top 20 rankings.

As its name indicates, Pro Football Magazine is dedicated solely to the sport of professional football. Since 1967 this magazine has provided comprehensive coverage that includes scouting analysis, inside information, previews, rosters, stats, feature stories and injury reports among many other features. The family of Pro Football Magazine titles includes Fantasy Football Guide, Draft Guide, Draft Preview and Pro Prospects Preview.
