How To Choose A Rug For Your Home

Choosing a rug is an important step when you are decorating a room. Rugs are different than carpets. With carpets, you usually find a solid color that you connect to the floor. Rugs, on the other hand, can be designs or solid colors. They are placed on top of the floor instead of set in place. You can choose a rug for any room in your house. However, with thousands – maybe even millions – of choices, how can you find the rug that is perfect for you?
Start by thinking of size. In your room, you usually want the carpet to fill the space but not go wall to wall. How big you want the carpet to be depends on the room and the furniture you plan to place in the room. For example, you might want a rug in your dining room to keep the chairs from scratching the hardwood floors. If this is the case, you want the rug to be a few feet bigger than the table to allow enough room for the chairs. The rugs you buy for each room in your house will most likely be different in size.
Once you have determined the size that you need, take a moment to set your budget. If you are not sure what to expect as far as price goes, do a little research online. That way, whether you choose to order online or at a home decor store, you can have a better idea of what rugs cost. By setting your budget early, you can ensure that you do not spend too much when you actually get to the store.
Doing a little research also allows you to see what is out there in terms of styles. Rugs come in many colors and designs, from formal and classic to fun and stylish. If you are looking for a floral rug for a formal dining room, you should not have too much trouble finding one. Likewise, if you are looking for a colorful and bright pattern for a child’s playroom, you should be able to find that design quite easily.
Since there are so many styles out there, try not to choose the first rug you see. By shopping around, you can find other varieties which are also available. When you compare all of your options, you will often find that the first rug you enjoyed most was not the best choice overall. Rugs are expensive, so you do not want to spend money on a rug only to find a better rug a few weeks later.
When you are shopping for a rug at a store, think about taking a camera with you. Of course, you would not need a camera if you shopped online. Nevertheless, taking or saving pictures is a great way to remember what you have seen in the past and it makes comparing two rugs a lot easier. Sometimes, if the store has a website, you can go online and print out pictures of the rugs you like. Simply ask a representative at a store for the product number of the rug you like and look it up online. These are all ways to help you remember the color of your carpets.
This process is easier when shopping online, because all of the pictures are right there on the page. You can either save them in a separate file or simply bookmark the page where you saw the rugs that you liked, and refer back to it as needed.
Also, to make shopping simpler, take a small piece of the current floor with you. Hopefully, you have a scrap of the wood or carpet left over from when you installed the floor originally. If you do not, try to find paper that is the same color. You can also take a close-up picture of the floor and print it out. The color is the most important part; when you take a sample with you, you can hold it next to the rugs you like to make sure that they look nice together.
When searching for rugs, don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. Looking online, or at your local home décor store is often the best choice. Asking friends or family about the styles they have is another great solution. This provides a second opinion or perhaps a better understanding of how to match the color rug with your current floor style. Not only does this help significantly with the decision process, but you also learn more about how to choose the best style.
Shopping for a rug for you home does not have to be a headache waiting to happen. As long as you are willing to put a bit of work into searching for the right rug, there are many options available for your consideration. Not every home needs a rug, but for many, it is a good idea. Set your budget, determine the size you need, and spend some time looking for a rug that you love, while researching different styles you may also want to ask your friends or family about how they decided on their particular rugs. These tips can help simplify the decision process a great deal and make finding that perfect rug an enjoyable experience.
