When shopping for bedding for your child, it is not always about what looks best. Although you want your baby’s room to look warm and inviting, what is more important is that you child is comfortable and safe. You should use the following tips when choosing bedding for your baby.

Tip #1: Purchase new items if hand-me-downs are more than a few years old.

In the past decade, we have learned a lot about keeping infants safe. Older cribs, mattresses, and other bedding supplies might save you money, but in most cases they are unsafe. You can help protect your baby from smothering or other injuries if you purchase new items that are deemed as safe.

Tip #2: Look for firmness.

When shopping for a mattress, a mattress pad, and other surfaces on which your baby will sleep, firmness is key. If you baby rolls onto his or her stomach, he or she may not be able to move in a soft mattress to prevent smothering. Today, most baby mattresses are very firm. Although they may seem hard to you, a firm mattress is the most comfortable and safe option for babies, especially newborns that are not yet in control of their muscles.

A firm mattress is the best choice for a baby because of the way they sleep. It is also the safest solution because it can prevent unnecessary injuries. To go along with this tip, keep in mind that babies typically do not need pillows. You should also avoid excess stuffed animals and toys in the crib. If the baby rolls over and his or her face is against the pillow or toy, he or she could easily suffocate.

Tip #3: Find bedding supplies that are easy to wash.

You would be surprised at how many blankets and other bedding supplies are dry clean only or, at the very least, must be washed in cold water. This is not good for your baby’s bedding. If the bedding is not easy to clean, you can lose a lot of money by throwing away the bedding. Make sure that anything you purchase can be washed in hot water to kill any germs. These bedding supplies can be expensive and by purchasing bedding that can be washed in warm water; you will be saving a lot of money. This is better for both you and your child because you can be sure that all germs are gone.

Tip #4: Warmer is better.

When babies are first born they like to be kept warm. In fact, most of the time, when you think a room is comfortable; your newborn is probably a little chilly. Remember, he or she just spent nine months in an environment that was over 98 degrees! So, when your baby is sleeping, don’t be afraid to bundle them with blankets. You need more than just a thin blanket or sheet to keep your baby warm, even if it is the middle of summer. You doctor can give you more advice about how much bedding to use.

Tip #5: Think about color coordination.

If you have more than one child, items can get confused in the laundry easily. While this might not be a huge deal with bedding, you can stay more organized if you color code, so to speak. Purchase bedding all of one color and you will never have to worry about the wrong sheets going to the wrong crib or wrong room. In addition, think about purchasing multiple sets of sheets that are all the same. That way, if one part of the set gets ripped or stained beyond use, you can substitute pieces from another set and no one will be able to tell the difference.
