Every now and then people experience nostalgia to varying degrees and at different times. For some nostalgia is strongest during landmark birthdays or during the holidays while others find themselves reminiscing most about friends and loves long past. One thing is for certain nostalgia is a part of every person’s life and so long as these longings for the past do not interfere with our daily lives nostalgia can be healthy and help us keep perspective on our current day state of affairs as well as remind us of some of our happiest and carefree times.

These days nostalgia is all around us as it’s a major business and all one needs to do to become nostalgic is turn on the television, radio, or even spend a few minutes on the internet. Though there have always been burger joints fashioned to the 1950’s, there are now more period themed restaurants than ever complete with relics, props, and music from specific periods in history. Additionally and with the aid of the internet those looking for things such as music, clothing, and memorabilia from their favorite time periods can build and maintain a very large collection.

Nostalgia is no longer relegated to simple collectors items however as the new millennium has brought with it a number of movies and television shows that are set in specific time periods and even those that are not period pieces often cite pop culture references from decades past in an attempt to draw in specific age groups. While not all of these motion pictures have been great the majorities of them have been highly profitable and have generated further interest in times gone by.

Another industry that has made a profit off of this ever growing wave of nostalgia is the photography industry. Capturing special events and gatherings to film and digital media has become commonplace in today’s world as digital technology has made it easy and convenient to do so. The introduction of digital technology has also allowed those who take photographs of any event or gathering to view their picture with little more than the push of a button. Even someone like a professional event photographer can rapidly produce photographs or place them on digital media for an individual so that they can be viewed whenever the mood arises.

Granted much of the nostalgia seen today is geared towards members of Generation X as groups heading towards middle age are often the prime targets for such nostalgia though targeting different age groups remains nearly equally as prosperous. As we get older we often find ourselves longing for the things that have long since passed and big business has helped keep our pasts alive in many different forms and will continue to do so.

Scott is an event photographer who regularly attends reunions and captures the memories made there for his clients.
