Fat is one of the major constituent of our diet which provides us almost double calories than carbohydrate. 1 gm of fat on complete digestion provides us with 37 kilo-joule energy (9calories) while same amount of carbohydrate provides only 17 kilo-joule (4calories). Though, major part of energy required for the body comes from carbohydrate but contribution of fats in giving energy is also high. Balancing the consumption of fat can do the trick for curing obesity but fat is present in almost all foods so balancing intake of fat is a bit difficult task. There is a FDA approved drug Orlistat which can help in dealing with obesity by restricting digestion and absorption of fat in the body.
Xenical (Orlistat) is an oral-prescription medicine which is very popular among millions of obese all over the world; particularly people of the US are having the benefits of this medication. This drug blocks the action of lipase which is a fat digestive enzyme. Controlled lipase digests 30% less fat than usual digestion of fat in the body. This way the body gets fewer calories from fat even after its consumption. The undigested fat gives no harm and comes out as stools. Xenical is available in volume of 120mg pills. There are some mild side effects associated with Xenical like oily spot, urgency of feces and irregular bowel motion. It was later found 60mg of Orlistat can produce similar effects with much lower and almost negligible side effects. This 60 mg weight loss Orlistat pills are known as Alli. The pills are small but their efficacy is high in curing obesity.
Alli is presently waiting for the approval of FDA for it’s over the counter-sale. Recently in International Congress on Obesity in Sydney German researchers have presented a report about the effectiveness of Alli in maintaining control over blood glucose level in the body. This way it is a helpful medication for those obese who are suffering from type 2 diabetes.
The medication may have some mild side effects like dizziness, oily spots, fecal urgency and irregular bowel motion. These side effects disappear with in days after continuous use of Alli. To avoid any problem in future doctor’s prescription is compulsory for Alli.
