A Penny Saved Is a Penny Earned. Dear Ben Franklin gave sage advice that's still good these days. The phrase means that by not spending money you will save it. Savings earn more money. It also tells us that even a little bit of money, a single penny, can make a difference when it's saved. The message means as well that we shouldn't spend money on things we don't need, and by sticking to that wisdom we'll make money that will work for us. That's what thrifty Ben did, which allowed him to travel and squire the ladies around, a nice thought for anyone's dotage. Those sage sayings work just as well today as they once did. It's a shame that we forgot them. I just thought it might be a good idea to bring them up again, especially since they are so important
