One of the first things you will want to figure out when you are considering plastic surgery is how necessary the procedure is. Are you simply undergoing this for aesthetic purposes? Are you looking to repair disfiguration that may have been caused by an accident or birth defect? Determining how necessary the plastic surgery is will give you some idea of how willing you are to deal with the healing that will have to take place weeks after your surgery. You may also have to take additional medications or visit the doctor for follow-up treatments after the initial surgery, so being prepared for this will make the whole procedure much easier.

You’ll also want to think about how many procedures you want done, so that you can time your surgeries correctly, and find a professional that is qualified to take care of all your requests. Be sure that all the plastic surgeons you’re considering are board certified, and meet with as many doctors for consultations as you need to before you make your final choice. Take a look at the plastic surgeon’s portfolio (live or online) to see the work he or she has done in the past. Make sure that your plastic surgeon understands when it comes to your needs, and is able to answer any questions you have about the actual surgery and recovery time. Be sure to pay special attention to the recommended timelines you should use when you are spacing out your plastic surgeries so that you will further damage your health. For instance, if you are having a breast lift, it is probably best to wait a few months before you undergo liposuction or get a nose job.

Perhaps most importantly, you will need to know what each surgical procedure entails. If you are thinking about breast implants, a small incision will be made near the armpit or under the breast to prevent unsightly scars, and a breast implant with a silicone shell and saline contents will be placed inside the breast. You can decide whether you want the breast implants to be inflated before they are placed in your body. For a breast reduction, fat and tissues will be removed or rearranged in the breast to give your breast a more even look and feel, and could reduce neck and back pain. Liposuction involves incisions as well; a tube is placed in the body to suck out fat in different areas of the body.

The more you know about the plastic surgery you want before you enter the plastic surgeon’s office, the more confident you will feel about requesting more information and preparing your body for these surgeries.
