Virulent Bacteria Killing People And Pigs

The virulent bacteria Extended Spectrum Beta lactamase (ESBL) is killing both humans and swine in Demark.

The bacteria ( a microscopic organism) has been associated in the deaths of cancer and liver disease sufferers. The percentage of infected sufferers jumped a staggering 50 in animals, farmers are feeding these animals low amounts of antibiotics. But the end result could be costly to the consumer as this creates the ideal condition for antibiotic resistance to thrive and flourish.

The Danish health authority say they are not sure of how vets and farmers, who have not eaten infected meat are still being infected. Maybe the answer doesnt have to be so complicated. Johns Hopkins website suggests in their research that the main place they congregate is in the lower digestive tract, and they can stay in the gastrointestinal tract for months.

In this unfortunate situation where progress is impossible, in this instance, its easy to see the struggle between science and bad politics. The FDA eventually banned fluoroquinolones from the farmers industry back in August 1997, however not without a fight from the Bayer Corporation. Not surprising as enlarging the size of their animals means more profit.

Other livestock such as chicken should be avoided. In 2006 an investigation published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases states that some chickens have been found with bacteria. People who have eaten these chickens have become immune to Synercid which is another antibiotic.

Other investigations have found antibiotic-free chickens had a far lower percentage of bacteria, if any at all.

HOWEVER....

The effects of farmers using antibiotics in livestock doesnt finish there. Antibiotics are passed through the food chain in many other ways such as through manure into our food supplies.

Another study compiled in 2007 from the Journal of Enviromental Quality delved into whether soil which had been used for growth in crop fields had become contaminated as the soil came from antibiotic treated animals. Research found that corn, carrots, radishes, lettuce and potatoes had an antibiotic in them.

All these crops had absorbed antibiotics through their leaves and roots due to the manure that was used.

Organic farmers have also been affected as manure is their main fertilizer. Although fetilizers that contain antibiotics are still allowed under the organic label.

So, how can we be sure that food we eat is healthy??

Apart from buying a greenhouse and growing it ourselves, our best option is to get aquainted with a local farmer or two. Obviously one that doesnt use any toxic farming methods. If you happen to live in urban area, there are lots of different community agriculture programs out there that can put you in the right direction of locally grown foods.

Your best bet is to look out for grass fed livestock as they are known to not be fed any antibiotics except if they had an infection but even then it wouldnt be for long.

Organic food is far superior (and tastes better). Natural is the key to a healthier lifestyle. To learn how to UNDO all the negative effects already in your system and to lose weight, visit
