Several countries have saved birth records in their centralized repository while US either stores it in every state’s Health Department or the Bureau of Vital Statistics office. The reason behind might be because there are a lot states and US will need several databases and will spend a lot of money just to maintain it. You might be able to find a copy of your birth records in your local offices such as registrar’s office or at your county’s office but not all does this. The birth records are simply kept in these places for genealogy purposes. The website Ancestry.com offers access to several databases where birth records are stored. Though, death certificates or marriage records can be retrieved from state records and other genealogy websites.

AS time pass by a lot of people has been moving from one state to another and the population also grew. Keeping or maintaining birth records of the people in each state or county is hard and tedious. Also when people need to get a copy of their birth records they need to travel to the office which is not an easy thing to do because it can be expensive just traveling. Also when local disasters happens the birth records can be wither because of the changing climate or it can be destroyed during an earthquake or typhoon.

Before the 20th century birth records were nowhere to be found in ones home or some keep it in the Bible for safe keeping. So in 1935 when the Social Security Administration was established people needed to have birth records most especially a birth certificate. Other people are think that their birth certificate is kept in the hospital where they are born but this is not true. The hospital only has the records on who is the attending physician and anything that has to do with a child’s birth. Most likely these records do not stay for a long time in the hospital considering that they have other important records to keep and maintain. But when it comes to government offices the birth records are really kept in the filing cabinets. The US Census Bureau was also thought to hold birth records but the truth is that it they never kept any birth record since they opened. Your birth records are all kept in the state where you born. So when you need to have a copy of it then you know where to ask.
