In the past anyone who could read and write may be a Lawyers clerk if they find employment in a law firm. But today the situation has drastically altered to a point where you must be well educated in law and Paralegal studies to be able to successfully carry out your duties as a Paralegal. The entry level of a Paralegal is a bachelor degree.

I worked as a Paralegal for a substantial part of my life. It is unknown to me that a lot of aspiring people jump into the Profession without adequate knowledge of what is really expected of them and the scope of Paralegal duties. This is why this article aims to educate you as to what you should expect as duties when you eventually graduate from your Paralegal training and find a Paralegal employment:

A guy may find a general duty paralegal employment in a law firm or a specialized paralegal job in Government and NGO offices as well as in law firms. In the law firms a Paralegal is usually assigned the job of colleting and indexing legal papers, writing legal documentations, counseling and taking depositions from witness before hearing in court and generally manage a law firm if he is the only Paralegal or the head of a group of Paralegals.

Your job as a Paralegal working in the Legal department of a Government office or in a None Governmental organization among others will include attending to people on legal matters and generally assisting them with the discharge of their legal problems in the department. Most organizations employ a Paralegal instead of a lawyer in order to minimize expenses, so you will be expected to be well trained to handle most legal issues that are applicable to the organization.

Today Paralegals are required in all the different endeavors of life. Government and Business offices such as Commercial firms, Insurance firms and even banks now employ Paralegals. For this reason you are expected to specialize in a particular Paralegal field of your choice in other to be qualified to work in that Paralegal field. For instance, a Military Paralegal should have been trained and passed both Military and war law courses to qualify as a Military Paralegal. You can obtain this kind of training as a fresh Paralegal student or as a working Paralegal who decides to upgrade their career.

In most organizations, especially the law firms, Paralegals have to work overtime most of the time considering the hug paper work generated in the law firms. You have to be hard working to be able to contain the pressure. However, the extra pay due you for the overtime work should be enough motivation to give your best. I know of Paralegals who make more money from overtime than their basic pay.

Finally, you can see that the Paralegal is not just a mere lawyer's clerk as he was referred to in the past. Today you have Paralegals in all fields of life, and the entry level for a Paralegal is now a Bachelor degree. The Paralegal profession has come a long way to gain the present respectable image and respect. Get proper training so as to acquit yourself well enough to be a proud Paralegal.
